Raiders Could Solve Big Issue by Targeting Newly Available Defender

The Las Vegas Raiders’ secondary has shown promise but remains a work in progress. With the recent release of veteran safety CJ Gardner-Johnson by the Houston Texans, the Raiders may have a prime opportunity to bolster their backfield and address lingering coverage concerns.

Gardner-Johnson’s release by Houston comes just three games into his tenure with the Texans, surprising many given the team traded a 2022 first-round pick for him in the offseason. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the 27-year-old safety, a former Super Bowl winner with the Eagles, struggled to consistently execute Houston’s defensive scheme, contributing to several big plays that helped opponents score.

“When you see a big play that happens on our defense, somewhere along the lines, there’s a bust in communication,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “It all starts with communication, and it hasn’t been as crisp as it needs to be.”

Despite starting every game for Houston, Gardner-Johnson posted 15 tackles but no interceptions or pass breakups. His inconsistency, combined with off-field friction with teammates, led to the Texans’ decision to part ways.

Raiders’ Secondary Needs

Las Vegas enters Week 4 with its own defensive questions. Head coach Pete Carroll acknowledged lapses after Week 3, stating, “Yeah, I thought that the corners did well again… we gave up the double move play. Kyu [Blu Kelly] got whipped on that one… we didn’t take care of that.”

While second-year cornerback Jakorian Bennett has been a bright spot—allowing just 71.5 passer rating when targeted and no touchdowns through four games—depth remains thin. Eric Stokes, on a one-year contract, and young talents like Kyu Blu Kelly and Darien Porter provide potential, but the Raiders could still benefit from an experienced, versatile safety.

Gardner-Johnson: A Fit for Las Vegas

Gardner-Johnson’s skill set as a physical, rangy safety could fill immediate gaps in Las Vegas’ backfield. His experience in multiple defensive schemes and ability to cover both slot and deep responsibilities would complement the Raiders’ existing secondary. While his tenure with Houston was rocky, Raiders coaches have a track record of maximizing raw, talented players, particularly in the defensive backfield.

Adding Gardner-Johnson could also provide leadership and insurance for a unit tasked with facing high-powered passing attacks in the AFC. Given Las Vegas’ recent struggles, acquiring a veteran capable of creating turnovers and stabilizing communication in the secondary may be the quickest way to turn defensive potential into consistent results.

The Raiders are at a crossroads in shaping a reliable secondary. With Gardner-Johnson suddenly available, Las Vegas has a chance to capitalize on Houston’s misstep and strengthen one of the most critical areas on their roster.
