The Houston Texans got a sigh of relief this week when head coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson is on track to play in Sunday’s season opener against the Los Angeles Rams. Gardner-Johnson’s brief injury scare on Aug. 7, when he was carted off during practice with a lower leg issue, had threatened to derail what the Texans see as a cornerstone addition to their secondary. Instead, imaging confirmed his ACL was intact, and Ryans now expects the playmaking defensive back to suit up.

That’s good news for a Houston defense designed to pressure quarterbacks from multiple angles. Last season, the Texans ranked 27th in passing yards allowed, but the pairing of Gardner-Johnson with a ferocious pass rush headlined by Will Anderson Jr. and newly signed Danielle Hunter promises to look much different.
Anderson, the 2024 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, already proved capable of wrecking game plans with his quickness off the edge. Adding Hunter, who has 99.5 career sacks and five Pro Bowl nods, gives Houston one of the more dangerous one-two punches in the AFC. With Gardner-Johnson roaming behind them, the Texans have the flexibility to disguise coverages, bait quarterbacks into risky throws, and capitalize on hurried decisions created by their front seven.
Gardner-Johnson has become a familiar opponent for LA. He squared off against Los Angeles twice last season with the Eagles and in the 2023 playoffs when with Detroit. He has limited his receivers to just one touchdown and under 40 yards on seven receptions
The timing of this defensive upgrade comes as the Rams enter 2025 with lingering questions on offense. While Matthew Stafford remains a proven veteran, he’s working behind an offensive line that allowed Stafford to get hit at the third-highest amount last year and faces early-season uncertainty due to a months-long battle with a mysterious back injury. That could spell trouble against a Houston unit eager to prove itself.
Gardner-Johnson’s ball-hawking ability — he was third in the NFL lead with six interceptions in 2024 — combined with Anderson’s relentless motor and Hunter’s polished technique, gives Ryans the pieces to create real problems for Los Angeles. If Houston’s front can collapse the pocket, Gardner-Johnson will be waiting to pounce on Stafford’s throws.
For a Texans team looking to climb in the AFC hierarchy, Week 1 offers a stage to showcase just how disruptive this new-look defense can be.
