Rams Now Facing Reality of Playing Without 2 Key Defensive Anchors

The Los Angeles Rams are staring at an uncomfortable Week 14 scenario: preparing for a critical matchup while two of their most productive defenders watch practice from the sideline. The strain on the defense would be felt at every level — from the interior line to the secondary — and the coaching staff knows it.

Rams Injury Report: Two Significant Absences at Practice

Nate Atkins of The Athletic captured the concern plainly in his midweek update: “Rams DT Poona Ford (calf) and CB Darious Williams (tibia) both missed a second straight day of practice. Williams was working with a trainer off to the side. Poona in particular would be a significant loss. L.A.’s run defense has been significantly better with him out there.”

Sean McVay didn’t hide the reality when outlining the latest injury report.
“As far as injuries are concerned, [Running Back] Kyren [Williams], [Safety] Kam Kinchens and [Inside Linebacker] Omar Speights will be limited,” McVay said. “[Wide Receiver] Davante [Adams] with his hamstring will be a DNP. Darious has a little bit of a tibia that’s bothering him so he’ll be a DNP and then [Nose Tackle] Poona Ford with his calf will be a DNP.”

Asked whether he still expects everyone to suit up on Sunday, McVay offered a quick, hopeful answer:
“I do. Yep.”

Hope, though, doesn’t erase the game-week uncertainty.

Poona Ford: The Quiet Engine of the Run Defense

Ford has been one of the Rams’ most consistent interior defenders this season:

  • 34 total tackles (13 solo)
  • 1.0 sack
  • 3 tackles for loss
  • 16 QB pressures

His ability to clog run lanes and disrupt passing windows has made him a stabilizing force up front. Ford’s absence would not just thin the depth chart — it would remove one of the most uniquely productive players on the roster.

Darious Williams: A Coverage Pillar

Williams has missed time this year but has still managed:

  • 22 total tackles
  • 1 tackle for loss
  • 1 interception
  • 8 passes defended — the highest among Rams DBs

His reach, timing, and recovery ability shape how the Rams structure their coverage. Losing him would significantly shift responsibilities onto a much younger group.

Defensive Tackle: A Thin Line Without Ford

If Ford can’t go, the Rams would lean heavily on:

  • Kobie Turner – starter and interior leader
  • Tyler Davis – next man up, likely to see a major workload increase

While Turner is proven, depth behind him is limited, which heightens the pressure on Davis.

Tyler Davis’ 2025 Defensive Output

Davis’ year shows real growth:

  • 36 total tackles (13 solo, 23 assisted)
  • 1 tackle for loss
  • 1.0 sack
  • 11 pressures, 10 QB hurries
  • 1 fumble recovery

Davis has logged 345 defensive snaps, nearly split between run defense (171 snaps) and pass rush (157 snaps). His pass-breakup numbers mirror the interior disruption Ford brings, giving the Rams some comfort that he can be more than a placeholder.

Defensive Back: Options, Not Panic

If Williams is unavailable, the Rams actually have workable depth:

  • Cobie Durant
  • Emmanuel Forbes
  • Josh Wallace
  • Ahkello Witherspoon
  • Derion Kendrick

This rotation isn’t lacking bodies or upside — what it lacks is Williams’ consistency.

The Bigger Picture: What Week 14 Might Look Like

The Rams can patch the secondary. They cannot easily patch the interior.

Ford’s combination of run defense and pass disruption is deeply embedded in how L.A. plays. Williams’ coverage impact is substantial, but the defensive backfield can better absorb a temporary loss.

McVay says he expects both players to be available. The practice report says otherwise.

And as the week narrows, the Rams are preparing for a very real possibility: handling one of their most important games of the year without two defenders who help define their identity.
