Tight Ends and Offensive Line

Tight end Colby Parkinson is in the league’s concussion protocol but is progressing well and is expected to play Sunday, McVay confirmed. “He’s making good progress and we anticipate him being available,” McVay said. With Tyler Higbee (hip) also recovering and expected to be monitored this week, the Rams may lean heavily on Davis Allen and rookie Terrance Ferguson at tight end.

Offensive lineman Rob Havenstein (ankle) is likewise making strides. If he misses time, Warren McClendon is prepared to start at right tackle alongside Kevin Dotson. McVay praised McClendon’s Thursday performance, noting he allowed only four pressures on Matthew Stafford while posting an above-average PFF run-blocking grade of 72.2.

McVay also updated Steve Avila’s status, who has been nursing an ankle injury for much of the season. According to Brock Vierra of Sports Illustrated, ‘Steve Avila should play this week and will get the start if he takes care of business in practice.’ With McVay adding, “If he practices and plays the way that I believe he’s capable of, then yes.”

Linebacker Concerns

The bigger setback may be linebacker Omar Speights, who suffered a high ankle sprain against the 49ers and is doubtful for Sunday’s matchup. The 24-year-old has tallied 24 tackles while playing 64% of defensive snaps this season. Past usage indicates the team will turn to Troy Reeder to fill the void.

Despite limited offensive snaps, Ferguson impressed in Thursday’s loss, hauling in a 21-yard reception on third-and-4 in tight coverage. According to Next Gen Stats, the throw had just a 27.6% completion probability. “He’s a stud,” McVay said. “Went up over the top of somebody in man coverage and made a great contested catch…He’s going to be a really good player for us, I believe.” Ferguson’s role is expected to grow, particularly if Higbee remains sidelined.

With injuries to key offensive and defensive pieces, the Rams face a challenging task against the Ravens, but McVay’s rookies and depth players have a chance to step up and keep the team competitive.
