Los Angeles Chargers Star Shocks NFL World By Announcing Retirement As Training Camp Kicks Off

It wouldn’t be the start to the Los Angeles Chargers‘ season without a little bit of drama.

Running Back Najee Harris nearly suffered a catastrophic 4th of July fireworks injury. 2nd-round pick Tre Harris is holding out and has not reported to camp yet.

And now, a reunion with wide receiver Mike Williams will end before it ever began, as it has been announced that he is retiring from the NFL.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Mike Williams’ agent, Tory Dandy, informed the team last night that his client was retiring from the NFL after 8 seasons and at the age of 30.

Williams was just recently put on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, meaning that he would miss the start of training camp. However, just this week, GM Joe Hortiz told reporters that he was “Just working through something small” and “could be out there any day.”

This makes you wonder if he was really injured and his decision to retire comes as a shock to the Chargers, or if putting him on the PUP list was more of a decoy to give him more time to figure things out, as he and the team were in communication.

Williams was drafted 7th overall by the Chargers in the 2017 NFL Draft. After a slow start to his NFL career, he broke out in his third season, breaking 1,000 yards (1,001) for the first time.

He spent last season split between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Jets, but his legacy will always be remembered as a Charger.

Perhaps the greatest play that he will be remembered for is a walk-off 2-point conversion against the Chiefs in Kansas City back in 2018.

He finishes his career with 5,104 yards and 32 touchdowns.

The Los Angeles Chargers are now left with a hole at the receiver position. While Williams was not going to be the same player that he once was, he was still going to chew up some reps and be a valuable red zone target for Justin Herbert.

Now they will need to turn to their depth, or perhaps, look at bringing someone else into the room.

As our friend Dan W states, Chargers legend Keenan Allen is still available, along with Amari Cooper and Gabe Davis, who was just released by the Jaguars in May.

All three of these players are completely different in skill set than that of Williams, but would bring a veteran presence to a Chargers WR room that is extremely young and inexperienced.

Regardless, the Chargers would be wise to add another body, and this makes the contract holdout of 2nd-round pick Tre Harris even more important to get settled.
