Chargers Share Encouraging WR Injury Update With Vague Timeline, Days Ahead Of Training Camp

The Los Angeles Chargers brought back Mike Williams this offseason to stabilize a thin receiving corps—and maybe catch lightning in a bottle one last time. But before training camp even begins, the 30-year-old wideout is again sidelined, landing on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list with a new, unspecified injury.

Despite concerns stemming from Williams’ well-documented ACL tear in 2023, General manager Joe Hortiz made clear that this latest issue is unrelated, according to Thuc Nhi Nguyen of the LA Times.

“Just working through something small,” Hortiz said, “And he could be out there any day.”

The vague timeline does little to dispel uncertainty, especially given Williams’ recent history. After returning to action in 2024 with the Jets and Steelers, he managed just 21 catches for 298 yards and one touchdown across 18 games. The Chargers still saw enough to bring him back on a one-year deal, hoping he could complement rookie standout Ladd McConkey and help give Justin Herbert a true outside threat.

But optimism around the reunion has already been tempered. Williams missed minicamp, and his placement on the PUP list prevents him from participating in practices until he’s medically cleared. If he remains on the list when the regular season begins, he’ll be ineligible for the first four games.

For a receiver once seen as a franchise cornerstone—he signed a $60 million extension just two years ago—the stakes couldn’t be higher. His durability and ability to regain form are now under a microscope.

If Williams can’t get right quickly, the Chargers may be forced to look elsewhere—possibly through a trade for Jauan Jennings or in the free agent market, where Amari Cooper remains a possibility.

For now, the hope is “any day” truly means soon.
