As the Los Angeles Chargers prepare for a high-stakes Monday Night Football matchup against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, the status of franchise quarterback Justin Herbert has emerged as a key uncertainty.
Herbert fractured his left (non-throwing) hand during Sunday’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders and underwent surgery on Monday to stabilize the injury.
Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters, “His QB Justin Hebert, who underwent surgery on a broken bone in his left hand Monday, will not practice today, even if he will be on the field for a walk-through. The Chargers are not ready to say whether Hebert will be able to play.”

Surgery Completed, But Questions Remain

While Herbert has expressed confidence about playing, saying, “I’m treating it as if I’m playing on Monday,” the team has taken a cautious approach. A Chargers statement confirmed Herbert’s return is considered day-to-day, with his availability for Week 14 to be determined later this week.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano noted that while Herbert intends to play, the question remains how much he will be able to practice—and whether that could affect his performance.
Adjustments on the Field
Herbert’s injury already forced the Chargers to modify their game plan against the Raiders. ESPN’s Kris Rhim reported that Herbert struggled with “holding on to the football,” prompting the team to limit under-center snaps. Backup Trey Lance was prepared for short-yardage and goal-line situations, seeing the field to protect Herbert’s hand. Harbaugh acknowledged the need for adjustments: “We’ll make sure Trey is getting more of those goal-line reps… I need to do a better job of that.”
Day-to-Day Outlook
Analysts emphasize that Herbert’s availability remains genuinely day-to-day. Swelling, ball security, and the risk of aggravating the injury in high-traffic situations mean the Chargers could employ a two-quarterback approach if needed. No official designation has been made, but the signs point to a cautious, situational strategy.
High Stakes in Week 14
The AFC playoff race leaves little room for error. Herbert is determined, the Chargers are hopeful, but analysts remain measured. Ultimately, the decision will hinge on how his hand responds during the practice week leading up to Monday night’s showdown.
