As the Los Angeles Chargers prepare for a marquee Monday Night Football showdown with the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles, uncertainty is creeping into the one place they can least afford it: the health of Justin Herbert.
A Fracture, a Surgery, and a Complicated Timeline
Herbert fractured his left (non-throwing) hand during Sunday’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders, an injury that required surgery less than 24 hours later. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, “He has said he plans to play Monday night against the Eagles, but we will see how much he can practice… and whether that will affect his performance if he does play.”
The Chargers echoed that caution in their team statement:
“Justin Herbert underwent successful surgery… to stabilize a fracture in his left hand. Herbert’s return to play is considered day-to-day, and his status for next Monday’s game… will be determined later in the week.”
Herbert insists he’s preparing as though he’ll play, saying after the game, “I’m treating it as if I’m playing on Monday.”
But analysts aren’t convinced it’s that simple.

Analysts Question Whether Herbert Can Function Normally

The concern is not whether Herbert can tolerate pain—his history proves he can—but whether he can execute the core mechanics of the position.
ESPN’s Kris Rhim reported that Herbert struggled most with “holding on to the football,” forcing the Chargers to abandon under-center snaps mid-game. Backup Trey Lance was prepped on the spot for short-yardage and goal-line work, and even saw the field to run packages tailored around protecting Herbert’s hand.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh admitted changes are coming:
“We’ll make sure Trey is getting more of those goal-line reps… I need to do a better job of that.”
This is the clearest indication yet that the Chargers may need two quarterbacks to execute a single game plan.

Why Analysts Believe Herbert’s Status Is Truly Uncertain
Herbert isn’t listed as doubtful. He hasn’t been ruled out. But analysts point to a more telling sign: the team is openly preparing for situational quarterback rotation, something they’ve never done with a healthy Herbert.
Between swelling, ball security concerns, and the risk of re-injury in high-traffic areas, his availability remains genuinely day-to-day—no matter how determined he is to suit up.
A High-Stakes Decision Ahead
The Chargers sit squarely in the AFC playoff race, and every possession matters. Herbert wants to play. The team wants him available. Analysts, though, remain cautious—and Week 14 may come down to what his left hand looks like not today, but Monday morning.
