Chargers Reveal Justin Herbert’s Post Surgery Status, Injury Concerns Remain

The Los Angeles Chargers announced Monday that quarterback Justin Herbert underwent successful surgery on his left non-throwing hand, leaving his availability for Week 14 against the Philadelphia Eagles uncertain but still very much in play.

Justin Herbert underwent successful surgery today in Los Angeles to stabilize a fracture in his left hand,” the team said in a statement. “Herbert’s return to play is considered day-to-day, and his status for next Monday’s game against Philadelphia will be determined later in the week.

Herbert suffered the injury during Sunday’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders but missed only a handful of snaps. Even after the procedure, the franchise quarterback has made his intentions clear.
I’m treating it as if I’m playing on Monday,” he said after the game, before undergoing surgery.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport also reported that Herbert’s goal is to play in Week 14, provided the hand responds well during the practice week.

With the Chargers labeling Herbert day to day, there is real optimism surrounding his Week 14 availability. The extra recovery time that comes with a Monday night kickoff works in his favor, as does the fact that the injury is not to his throwing hand.

If Herbert is unable to go, the expectation is he would return in Week 15.

Herbert has a long track record of playing through pain. He previously competed with a broken left middle finger in 2023 and remains one of the league’s most durable quarterbacks. Since entering the league in 2020, the Chargers are 1–4 in games he has missed due to injury.

Justin Herbert’s 2025 Pressure Profile Shows Why He’s Essential

Part of the urgency to get Herbert back comes from the reality of how much he’s carried this offense behind a shaky line. Through Week 13:

  • He has faced 223 pressures on 466 dropbacks — a staggering 47.85% pressure rate, one of the highest in the NFL.
  • Despite that, his 8.15% sack rate shows outstanding pocket management.
  • He has taken 59 hits, or 12.66% of his dropbacks — a number that raises durability concerns but also highlights his toughness.
  • He operates from shotgun on 81.76% of snaps, part of the Chargers’ effort to help him diagnose pressure faster and mitigate damage.

Even under constant duress, Herbert has completed 66.9% of his passes for 2,842 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, steering the Chargers to an 8–4 record and the No. 5 seed in the AFC.

What Comes Next

The Chargers will release their first injury report on Thursday, offering the next critical update. Until then, Herbert is pushing to play, the team is evaluating swelling and grip strength, and Los Angeles is hoping the franchise’s most important player is available for a marquee Monday night matchup that could shape the AFC playoff race.
