Nikola Jokic Addresses Lakers Trade Rumors Amid Contract Talks

Los Angeles Lakers trade rumors are once again dominating headlines, this time centered on Nikola Jokić. After the Denver Nuggets star declined a three-year, $200 million extension, speculation quickly linked him to big-market teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors. With the Lakers already reshaping their identity around Luka Dončić, whispers of pairing him with Jokić gained traction — but the reigning three-time MVP made it clear at Denver’s media day that he has no plans to leave.

When asked directly about his future, Jokić dismissed the idea of leaving Denver. “My plan is to be a Nugget forever,” he told reporters. He clarified that waiting to sign a contract had nothing to do with weighing other options, but everything to do with maximizing his long-term deal. “I think those contract extensions come as a reward. As something that’s natural to the sport. Especially in today’s NBA you see how the salary cap is going and everything.”

By waiting until next summer, Jokić will be eligible for nearly $300 million over four years—$80 million more than what he would have received by signing early. Nuggets president Josh Kroenke underscored the team’s stance: “We’re definitely going to offer it. I’m not sure if he’s going to accept it or not.”

Lakers Trade Rumors Keep Circulating

Despite Jokić’s loyalty, Lakers trade rumors aren’t going away. The Athletic’s Sam Amick recently reported that the Lakers, Clippers, and Warriors are all monitoring the 2027 free agency class, when both Jokić and Giannis Antetokounmpo could have player options. With Dončić locked in as the face of the franchise, the Lakers are keeping their books clean and maintaining flexibility for a potential superstar pairing down the line.

A Dončić–Jokić duo would instantly form one of the most gifted offensive tandems in NBA history, while Antetokounmpo’s versatility offers another dream scenario for the Lakers. For now, though, Jokić appears firmly entrenched in Denver.

Nuggets Focused on Championship Goals

While the Lakers chase future possibilities, the Nuggets are focused on the present. They retooled their roster this offseason by swapping Michael Porter Jr. for Cam Johnson, bringing back Bruce Brown, and adding Tim Hardaway Jr. and Jonas Valančiūnas. With Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon, and Christian Braun continuing to develop, Denver believes they’ve built a deeper, smarter roster around Jokić.

For all the noise around Lakers trade rumors, the Joker made his stance clear: “My plan is to be with the Nuggets forever.” Whether or not the Lakers eventually test that commitment, Denver looks ready to compete for another title right now.
