The Lakers’ interest in Collins isn’t new. Sources close to the organization say the front office has long admired Collins’ skillset—particularly his ability to stretch the floor, both as a capable three-point shooter and as a vertical threat. While Collins’ fit with the Utah Jazz has been serviceable, many in L.A.’s front office view him as a better complement alongside newly acquired superstar Luka Doncic.
Hachimura, however, remains valued in the Lakers’ building. He’s improved steadily since arriving in 2023 and was one of the few bright spots in L.A.’s first-round exit against Minnesota. Still, Collins’ athleticism and size give him the edge in areas of need for the Lakers, especially rebounding and interior finishing.
Andy Larsen of The Salt Lake Tribune added fuel to the Lakers trade rumor fire during a recent appearance on the “Locked On Jazz” podcast, confirming the Lakers and Jazz have held multiple talks about both Collins and center Walker Kessler. While a Kessler deal appears less likely due to Utah’s high asking price, a Hachimura-Collins swap could be more viable—especially if the Lakers include an expiring contract like Gabe Vincent to balance salaries without triggering a hard cap.
With limited draft capital and cap space, the Lakers are exploring creative ways to bolster their frontcourt. Whether it’s Collins, Kessler, or another target, Rui Hachimura may ultimately be the key piece that unlocks their next big move. For now, trade talks continue—but momentum is building in Los Angeles.
