Sources Reveal Los Angeles Lakers’ Pursuit of Jazz Big Man Heating Up

The Los Angeles Lakers have shown clear interest in Utah Jazz forward John Collins as they look to bolster their frontcourt depth, according to Locked On Jazz host Andy Larsen. Although the Jazz do not anticipate receiving significant value in return for Collins, discussions between the teams have been ongoing.

“The Lakers-John Collins has been a conversation that’s been had,” Larsen said. “The Warriors were interested at the trade deadline before they got Jimmy Butler. Contract-wise, that doesn’t work out anymore. Collins had a productive season last year, so there should be interest around the league. But I don’t expect the Jazz to get much value back in these deals.”

A major hurdle for potential suitors is Collins’ player option for the 2025-26 season, valued at $26 million. Given the lucrative guarantee, it’s almost certain Collins will exercise that option, limiting free agency opportunities. For the Lakers to acquire Collins, they would likely need to match expiring contracts or make a trade involving players with compatible salaries.

One projected scenario sees the Lakers sending forward Rui Hachimura and big man Maxi Kleber to Utah in exchange for Collins. While Hachimura has been a solid contributor, the Lakers appear ready to prioritize rebounding and rim protection—qualities Collins offers in abundance. This move would also allow Los Angeles to move on from Kleber and free up roster space to find a stronger bench presence and center to complement Jaxson Hayes.

Collins’ hustle, rim-running ability, and veteran savvy make him an ideal fit alongside the Lakers’ core of Austin Reaves, Luka Dončić, LeBron James, and Hayes. Following last season’s playoff loss to the Timberwolves, which exposed the Lakers’ lack of size and depth, adding a player like Collins could be a crucial step toward returning to championship contention in a competitive Western Conference.

The Lakers have long shown interest in Walker Kessler, Collins’s Jazz teammate, viewing him as a valuable asset to bolster their frontcourt. Known for his elite shot-blocking and rim protection, Kessler’s skill set perfectly complements their need for a defensive anchor inside. While the team has pursued various trade avenues, Kessler remains a key target as they look to add size and toughness to compete in the physically demanding Western Conference.
