Earlier this week, NBA insider Shams Charania announced that Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James will miss at least the first month of the NBA season with a sciatica injury. Shams noted LeBron will be taking a “patient” approach to his recovery.

James, at 40 years old, continues to defy the odds and became the oldest player in NBA history to average 25 ppg and make an all-NBA team. However, Father Time is still undefeated, and even LeBron James’ body will have injuries like this as LeBron turns 41 in December.

Many franchises would be devastated over losing their team’s 2nd best player, making $45 million per year. However, Lakers franchise point guard Luka Dončić does not view LeBron’s injury as a negative, but rather an opportunity, as Luka told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, “I don’t view it that way. I just want to play basketball…whatever it takes to win.”

This is the type of mentality Lakers fans are looking for from their newest superstar, as Dončić signed a contract extension this summer that will make Luka a Laker until at least 2028.

LeBron’s absence is a huge blow, but it gives Luka a chance to shine as the true top option in Redick’s offense. Additionally, it gives Luka a chance to gel with the other Lakers teammates.

LeBron’s absence will also give role players more opportunities, like Austin Reaves, Deandre Ayton, and Rui Hachimura, to step up and fill the void.

Luka and the Lakers begin their season this Tuesday, October 21st, against the Golden State Warriors as Luka looks to win his first career MVP.
