Hyeseong Kim, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ highly anticipated infield acquisition from the KBO, faces uncertainty regarding his inclusion in the team’s trip to Tokyo. Despite his impressive defensive credentials, including four Gold Glove awards, ongoing discussions suggest he may remain in the United States.

Kim’s arrival, marked by a three-year, $12.5 million contract and the subsequent trade of Gavin Lux, initially signaled his potential to become a key component of the Dodgers’ infield. Manager Dave Roberts has expressed confidence in Kim’s defensive abilities, stating,
“Defensively, I think it’ll be very seamless.” However, Roberts has also acknowledged the challenges Kim faces in adjusting to the higher velocity and different pitching styles of MLB. “Offensively, there’s certainly more velocity. Controlling, getting his path right. Being able to handle balls that move late, handle velocity, and use the whole field. He’s going to put the ball in play. He can run. I just think he needs repetition,” Roberts explained.
The Dodgers’ primary concern revolves around Kim’s offensive performance. “I would say, if there’s one part of it, the question mark, I would say it is the bat,” Roberts admitted. “The competition is different over there than here. … Obviously he’s going through some swing changes that he believes will help him also make this transition easier and sustainable.” Roberts emphasized that Kim is currently competing for a roster spot, and the team is carefully evaluating his progress.
“He bet on himself to come here and to compete, and so right now he’s in a competition to earn a job with us. I would say that that’s still all in play, and we don’t need to make a decision right now, obviously, but I would say that if there’s one thing that … still is in question is the bat. And I think that’s a fair thought on our part.”
Despite the high expectations surrounding Kim, the Dodgers are mindful of his rookie status and the need for adjustment. Starting the season in the minor leagues could be a beneficial option. Alternatively, the team might choose to keep him in Arizona for additional training at Camelback Ranch, allowing him to focus on his offensive development before potentially joining the domestic opening-day roster.
