The Los Angeles Dodgers signing of right-handed reliever Kirby Yates is now official. That part is not surprising. What is a little bit of a surprise is how the Dodgers got the move to be official.

In order for the signing to be complete, the Dodgers had to clear roster space to make room. We wrote last week that reliever Ryan Brasier had been put on the trade block, and the Dodgers were shopping for a potential partner.

At this time, instead of a trade, the Dodgers have designated Brasier for assignment. The team will have 10 days to find a landing spot for Brasier via trade, but if they are unable to, the veteran will head to waivers and can be claimed by any team.

There is a very good chance that they will be able to find a suitor and get something in return, but DFA’ing Brasier speeds up the process.

Kirby Yates’ contract is a one-year deal worth $13 million.

Brasier joined the Dodgers in 2023 after he was cut by the Boston Red Sox. He played a key role in the Dodgers’ World Series run in 2024 and was the starting pitcher in multiple bullpen-designated games.
