The Los Angeles Chargers are losing a key member of their defensive staff. Safeties coach Chris O’Leary is expected to become the new defensive coordinator at Western Michigan.
This is a big blow for the Chargers as O’Leary is one of the rising coaching stars in the game, and was instrumental in the quick development of the Chargers safeties room, including the emergence of Elijah Molden.
The Los Angeles Chargers will need to work fast to replace him and a talented familiar face is actually available.
Chris Hewitt Available For Los Angeles Chargers Safeties Job
Chargers safety Tony Jefferson was asked by our good friend Steven Haglund of the Guilty As Charged Podcast about the possibility of Chris Hewitt taking over the open role.
Jefferson responded, “Would be a perfect fit. But I’m sure he’s got plenty of options.
Hewitt was the assistant head coach and pass game coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. He had been with this Ravens organization since 2012 before he and the team decided to mutually part ways on Wednesday.
We all know the ties between the Chargers and Ravens run deep. The obvious relationship between both Harbaughs led to Joe Ortiz earning the Chargers GM role, along with other staffers, and multiple players including J.K. Dobbins and the aforementioned Tony Jefferson, who played for the Ravens in two separate stints and was a scouting intern for them in 2023, before coming out of retirement to join the Bolts last year.

Hewitt will have plenty of interest around the league and is probably hopeful of getting a coordinator gig, but if the Chargers can sway him, it would be a home run hire. It would also give them a solid succession plan if current DC Jesse Minter gets head coaching looks in the near future.
Will Chris Hewitt be the next Raven to join the Chargers?
