In a post on X.com, Leinart acknowledges the frustration among fans but believes that the team is still on track to achieve long-term success. He emphasizes that this is only the third year of Lincoln Riley’s tenure, and the transition to the Big Ten conference has added an extra layer of complexity.

“As frustrated as everyone is with USC it is a process. This is year 3 and first year in the Big 10. Let’s try and have patience and trust that Lincoln and this staff will figure this out. Fight On!” Leinart said in his post.

“Trust the process” was made famous recently in the sports world by the Philadelphia 76ers. The phrase was coined by former Philadelphia 76ers guard Tony Wroten during an interview with ESPN’s Pablo Torre. It refers to a long-term strategy implemented by former general manager Sam Hinkie. This strategy involved acquiring as many assets as possible, including draft picks and young players, to build a championship-caliber team eventually. Heinkie was fired after four years on the job and the team has yet to win an NBA Championship.

While the Trojans have been competitive in most of their games, they have struggled to close out close contests. Riley has acknowledged the need to make crucial plays in critical moments to secure victories.

The Trojans have a chance to turn their season around with five games remaining. While playoff hopes may be fading, they can still fight for bowl eligibility and build momentum for the future. With a talented roster and a strong recruiting class, USC remains optimistic about its long-term prospects.

In terms of the alternate plan of moving on from Riley at this point, a $90 million buyout stands between that and the school.
