Three Players Raiders Could Trade This Season, Including Former Starter

The Las Vegas Raiders are in the process of throwing out everything but the kitchen sink and could even look at remodeling that.

It started with Pete Carroll and Geno Smith, but all signs point to it not ending there. As such, very few, aside from Smith, Maxx Crosby, and Brock Bowers, appear to have any guarantees beyond this season. However, some are more likely to see an exit via trade even sooner than that.

Here’s a look at three players who could be shipped out in the coming weeks and months.

Aidan O’Connell, Las Vegas Raiders QB

Aidan O’Connell came into training camp as the de facto top backup for Smith, but NFL teams love to pursue potential.

Cam Miller is that “two-in-the-bush” type of player with plenty of untapped potential. The rookie had an outstanding showing against the Seattle Seahawks, helping to pull the team back to recover from O’Connell’s two interceptions.

With Miller coming in as Pete Carroll and John Spytek’s guy, he is one player to watch, and if he climbs above O’Connell, the incumbent backup could see his way out by the start of the regular season.

O’Connell has shown flashes before, which could entice another team to pull the trigger.

If the Raiders are curious enough about Miller, they could net some draft capital to help with the roster-wide rebuild and give Miller a more likely starting chance in one fell swoop.

Zamir White, RB

Zamir White is still young, heading into just his fourth season in the NFL. However, stuck behind Ashton Jeanty and likely Raheem Mostert, the Raiders appear to be merely tolerating White at the moment instead of fostering his growth up the depth chart.

As a player who averaged 4.3 yards per carry and earned nearly 500 yards in 2023, a different team inquiring about White as a trade option could be all the Raiders need to send him away.

White is on his third head coach, and it can be almost impossible to win over three different sets of ways of thinking with a player’s single skillset. As such, White is on trade watch.

If traded, it would open the door for Sincere McCormick, who is younger and carries a bit more untested potential with just one season of data.

Michael Mayer, TE

If the Raiders have one position group they should feel thrilled about, it’s their tight end room. Brock Bowers alone would make any tight end room solid, but the Raiders also have several veterans to help fill in whatever small gaps Bowers leaves to be filled.

As such, if other parts of the roster fall on hard times or Spytek realizes they have a gaping hole elsewhere, the general manager might be open to taking from the tight end room to fill another room.

Bowers is out of the question, so they might get the most for Mayer while being able to afford losing him. Mayer has started 20 games in his career and averaged 9.6 yards per reception in his 48 career catches over the past two seasons.

It wouldn’t be a case of anything other than roster management for Mayer, who could be a top-two tight end on several other rosters in the league.

Additionally, with Ian Thomas recently brought aboard, the team could be looking for a way to move him up the depth chart, which would potentially also give them reason to move Mayer as a player leftover from a previous regime.
