Raiders Secure Much-Needed Defender, Add Former 3rd-Round Pick

The Las Vegas Raiders have added a promising young linebacker to their practice squad, signing former Minnesota Vikings third-round pick Brian Asamoah II. The move comes after a whirlwind month for the 25-year-old, who has now joined his third NFL organization in as many weeks.

Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 reported the transaction, noting the Raiders also signed quarterback Jeff Driskel while releasing Matt Jones and Trey Taylor. “#Raiders also sign Brian Asamoah II to the practice squad, released Matt Jones and Trey Taylor from the practice squad,” Wilson wrote on X.

Asamoah, a standout at Oklahoma, was selected 66th overall by Minnesota in the 2022 NFL Draft. He entered a Vikings linebacker room in transition, as stalwarts Eric Kendricks and Anthony Barr had moved on or were nearing the end of their careers. As a rookie, Asamoah appeared in all 16 games, recording 17 tackles and making a key forced fumble and recovery in Week 16 against the New York Giants, helping Minnesota clinch the NFC North.

Despite flashes of potential, Asamoah struggled to secure a consistent role. The rise of undrafted free agent Ivan Pace in 2023 limited his snaps to just 36, producing seven tackles. A similar story unfolded in 2024 after Minnesota added Blake Cashman; Asamoah played only 33 defensive snaps and recorded six tackles.

The Vikings ultimately waived Asamoah on August 12, 2025. The Tennessee Titans claimed him briefly, giving him a chance to face his former team in a preseason game, but he was cut again on August 26. Now, Las Vegas represents a new opportunity to revive his career.

The Raiders’ linebacker room is deep, featuring Germaine Pratt, Elandon Roberts, Devin White, Jamal Adams, Tommy Eichenberg, Brennan Jackson, and Cody Lindenberg. While the active roster is largely set for the season opener against the New England Patriots, the practice squad remains a space for developing talent.

Asamoah brings youth and athleticism to the mix, traits that could allow him to carve out a role if he can contribute in the passing game. For now, he will learn the Raiders’ system and look to make an impact in practice, with the hope of earning a promotion to the 53-man roster.

For Asamoah, the path back to prominence starts with seizing every opportunity on the practice field — a familiar story for a player who has flashed potential but never yet fully unlocked it at the NFL level. The Raiders are betting that he can do just that.
