Raiders Make Strategic Jayden Daniels Decision Ahead of Critical Commanders Tilt

The Las Vegas Raiders are gearing up for a critical Week 3 matchup against the Washington Commanders, preparing for the likely return of star quarterback Jayden Daniels despite a knee injury. Daniels did not practice Wednesday after sustaining a sprained left knee in Thursday’s loss at Green Bay, but the Raiders are planning as if he will play.

Raiders head coach Pete Carroll confirmed the team’s approach. “We have to prepare for him playing. The bet is probably that he will. They might not practice him until later in the week, but we’re going to count on him going,” Carroll said. While backup Marcus Mariota remains a potential option, Carroll emphasized, “We have a lot of background about Marcus on the staff so we know what his capabilities are, we think, so we’re preparing for both guys, but primarily for Jayden.”

The Commanders are dealing with a slew of injury issues, including season-ending losses of Austin Ekeler (Achilles) and Deatrich Wise Jr. (quad). Daniels’ knee sprain adds further uncertainty. Last week, the Raiders struggled at home against the Chargers, giving up three interceptions and failing to generate a strong impact from key offensive weapons.

Despite their short week and previous performance, the coaching staff is taking nothing for granted. “We have to prepare for the player who is going to be on the field,” Carroll said, signaling that the Raiders’ game plan revolves around Daniels’ mobility and playmaking ability.

If Daniels cannot suit up, they will face Marcus Mariota, a veteran quarterback with prior starting experience. Mariota played with the Raiders in 2020-21 and has handled similar situations before, including relief stints last season that resulted in wins over Carolina and Dallas.

“My routine stays the same,” Mariota said. “It just kind of creates that normal procedure for me and it allows me just to go out there and play and not have to worry about, OK, I got to do this extra, I got to do that. I just kind stick to my process and allow that process to work.”

Raiders players and staff are confident in Mariota’s experience. Receiver Terry McLaurin praised him, saying, “He’s played at a high level for a long time… He brings a calm to the huddle that is reassuring for everyone in there. He’s a pros pro. You always feel his energy.”

Washington coach Dan Quinn stressed the importance of player health, but the Raiders are preparing as if Daniels will be under center. “We recognize the importance of the person and player and what he means for the franchise. We’re going to be smart, not just fast,” Quinn said.

Mariota also acknowledged Daniels’ determination to play. “We always tell him, just be you, and if you feel through the course of the week you get back to that point, great. We’ll support you to be ready to roll. If you need a week, that’s OK, I’ll be ready to go, too,” Mariota said.

For Las Vegas, preparation is key. They will continue planning for Daniels while remaining ready for Mariota, ensuring the team can capitalize on any opportunity in a crucial Week 3 matchup.
