The Las Vegas Raiders are just two weeks away from kicking off the 2025 NFL season, but a major storyline has erupted before the Silver and Black even take the field. Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, the team’s leading pass catcher and clear No. 1 option, has formally requested a trade, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
Per the report, Meyers recently met with Raiders brass to push for a move after contract negotiations broke down. While the team acknowledged his value, they told him they have no plans to trade him at this time.
Jakobi Meyers Demands Trade as Raiders Extension Talks Stall

The 28-year-old wideout is entering the final year of his contract, and his request comes after an offseason-long push for an extension. Meyers is coming off the best season of his career — his first 1,000-yard campaign — and has established himself as the centerpiece of Las Vegas’ young receiver group. With Geno Smith stepping in as the Raiders’ new veteran quarterback, Meyers was expected to be the stabilizing target in an offense still shaping its identity.
Crucially, Meyers has not resorted to a holdout. He’s been present throughout the offseason program and training camp, a signal that his preference remains staying in Las Vegas — if the financial commitment is there.
Internal Optimism — Until Now
On a recent episode of the Las Vegas Raiders Insider Podcast, co-host Ezekiel Trezevant compared Meyers’ situation to left tackle Kolton Miller’s past extension.
“I think they are going to do something similar with Jakobi,” Trezevant said. “I think they are going to let it play out for the first couple of games. I think if Jakobi has a couple of good games, do not let it get out of hand.”
That logic may no longer hold. By requesting a trade, Meyers has publicly raised the stakes. If the Raiders attempt to play the waiting game, they risk not only alienating their top receiver but also creating leverage for rival teams eyeing him as a free-agent prize in 2026.
Raiders at a Crossroads
For a franchise still reshaping itself under new leadership, the Meyers standoff couldn’t come at a worse time. The Raiders are building around a young receiver group, and Meyers is both the most productive and the most reliable piece of it. Allowing his contract status to fester could derail continuity at a moment when the offense needs stability.
The team has two choices: commit to Meyers now with an extension that reflects his value, or risk a season-long distraction with their best offensive weapon openly dissatisfied. With the opener fast approaching, the Silver and Black’s decision will send a clear message about their priorities in 2025.
