Raiders Reveal Brock Bowers Decision For Commanders Tilt

The Las Vegas Raiders received a major boost ahead of their Week 3 matchup against the Washington Commanders. Rookie tight end Brock Bowers (knee) has no injury designation for Sunday’s game after practicing in a limited capacity throughout the week. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET on FOX, with live streaming available via Fubo (regional restrictions may apply).

Just days ago, Bowers entered the Chargers game listed as questionable, yet he played through the injury and logged a 77 percent snap share, finishing with five receptions on eight targets for 38 yards in a 20-9 loss. His status for Week 3 is now confirmed, giving the Raiders’ offense some much-needed stability.

Through two games, the former Georgia standout has posted 10 catches for 141 yards, averaging 70.5 yards per game. His ability to produce despite playing through discomfort underscores why he has already become a central figure in the passing attack alongside wide receiver Jakobi Meyers.

Commanders See Him as a Receiver, Not Just a Tight End

The Commanders’ defensive staff knows Bowers will be a focal point. Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. spoke highly of the rookie’s impact, acknowledging the unique challenge he presents.

“A dynamic, young tight end that when you talk about being one of the best receiving threats, you have to almost treat him like a receiver,” Whitt said. “He’s just a dynamic player. I remember watching him when he was at Georgia when he was a freshman and I was like, if he came out, he’d probably be the first tight end to get drafted if he came out as a freshman. So, I have a lot of respect for him.”

That respect also comes with urgency. Last week, Washington’s defense was exposed by Green Bay’s Tucker Kraft, who torched them for six receptions, 124 yards, and a touchdown.

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III believes the Raiders can—and should—use Bowers to replicate Green Bay’s success against Washington’s defense.

“Honestly, this week [the Raiders] have some pretty good mismatches against this Commanders defense in the tight end room,” Griffin said on The Silver and Black Show. “Last week, the Washington Commanders gave up 156 yards receiving to the Green Bay Packers’ tight ends. So if Brock Bowers is healthy and hopefully can get that knee brace off or be a little bit more comfortable with it on, it should be a field day for them in the middle of the field.”

The onus now falls on offensive coordinator Chip Kelly to craft a game plan that highlights Bowers’ versatility while exploiting the same defensive gaps Kraft exposed a week ago.

Raiders’ Offensive Struggles Add Pressure

Las Vegas enters Week 3 with plenty of offensive concerns. After an opening win over the New England Patriots, the Raiders stumbled in Week 2, failing to score a touchdown against the Chargers. Quarterback Geno Smith threw three interceptions while rookie running back Ashton Jeanty struggled to establish a consistent ground game.

With those issues lingering, they may need Bowers’ playmaking ability more than ever.

Staying Cautious but Confident

The Raiders have been careful with Bowers’ workload. Last week, he didn’t practice until late in the week. This time around, he logged multiple limited sessions, a clear step forward in his recovery.

While his production dipped from 103 yards in Week 1 to 38 yards in Week 2, the rookie has shown he can be effective even when not fully healthy. With no designation heading into Sunday, all signs point to Bowers maintaining a leading role in the passing game.

What to Watch

The Commanders know Bowers will be targeted early and often, but whether they can stop him is another question. If Las Vegas can exploit Washington’s vulnerability to tight ends, Bowers could be in line for his biggest performance yet as a pro.
