The Chicago Bears will be without one of their most intriguing young players when they face the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Rookie tight end Colston Loveland, selected 10th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, has been ruled out due to a hip injury sustained in last week’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Loveland was officially listed as questionable heading into the weekend, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the first-rounder will not be able to suit up. His absence is another blow to a Chicago roster already dealing with multiple injuries.
Through three games, Loveland has recorded three catches for 43 yards, including a 31-yard reception against Dallas—the longest play of his young career. While his numbers remain modest, the Bears had been gradually expanding his role. He played more than half of Chicago’s offensive snaps in Weeks 1 and 2 before the injury limited him to just 10 percent of the workload in Week 3.
Adjustments at Tight End

Gotta have the Latest from LA + LUKA Mind-meld
In response to Loveland’s absence, the Bears elevated Stephen Carlson from the practice squad. Carlson, a Princeton product who last appeared in a game in 2023, will provide depth behind veteran starter Cole Kmet and blocking tight end Durham Smythe.
Kmet figures to take on a heavier role against Las Vegas, particularly in the passing game. Smythe is expected to continue as a blocking presence, though his snap count could increase as Chicago looks to keep its offense balanced without its rookie weapon.
Other Injury Notes
Loveland isn’t the only player Chicago will be missing. The Bears officially ruled out right tackle Darnell Wright, linebacker T.J. Edwards, and defensive lineman Grady Jarrett. Cornerback Kyler Gordon and running back D’Andre Swift, meanwhile, remain questionable. Chicago also signed linebacker Carl Jones Jr. to the active roster and elevated defensive lineman Jonathan Ford from the practice squad.
Bears Seek Momentum in Week 4
The timing of Loveland’s setback is disappointing for a Bears team that finally found footing in Week 3. After an 0-2 start, Chicago responded with a decisive win over Dallas and now looks to build its first winning streak of the season.
The Raiders, meanwhile, enter on a two-game skid following back-to-back double-digit defeats. Despite their struggles, Las Vegas is currently favored, shifting from underdog to slight favorite as kickoff approaches.
