Las Vegas Raiders Insider Reveals Surprising Role For New Addition Running Back

The Las Vegas Raiders appear to be building a thoughtful rotation at running back, and a surprising piece of that puzzle is veteran Raheem Mostert. According to The Athletic’s Tashan Reed, Mostert is expected to serve as the team’s primary third-down back, a move designed to keep No. 6 overall pick Ashton Jeanty fresh over the course of the season.

The Las Vegas Raiders Have A Defined Role For Raheem Mostert

This news may come as a surprise to some, expecting Jeanty to operate as a true bell cow. The Boise State star arrived in Vegas with a three-down skill set, including 80 catches for 862 yards over his collegiate career. While Jeanty still projects as the clear lead back, Reed notes that the Raiders want to avoid overworking their rookie—especially early in his NFL transition.

Mostert, 33, signed a one-year, $2.1 million deal this offseason and brings experience, pass-blocking ability, and a reliable receiving presence. Despite falling out of favor in Miami last year, he’s only a season removed from a 21-touchdown Pro Bowl campaign. His presence allows the Raiders to mix in a change of pace and protect Jeanty’s long-term health.

Sincere McCormick and Zamir White remain in the mix, but Reed’s report signals a defined early role for Mostert in Las Vegas’ revamped backfield.
