Las Vegas Raiders’ Forgotten Player Gets Fresh Start, A Chance To Finally Emerge As Major Playmaker In 2025

A year ago, Michael Mayer’s future with the Las Vegas Raiders seemed in doubt. A second-round pick in 2023, the former Notre Dame standout flashed potential as a rookie, but his sophomore campaign was marred by personal setbacks and a diminished role after the arrival of Brock Bowers. The All-Pro rookie tight end quickly became the centerpiece of the offense, pushing Mayer to the sidelines and, briefly, the trade block.

Now, under the guidance of new head coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, Mayer has a fresh opportunity in 2025.

“I thought Mike had a great offseason with us,” Carroll said. “He embraced the challenge. Before Brock got here, he was already making plays. And they’ve both gone back and forth — real competitors.” Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly echoed that praise, hinting at creative flexibility: “I checked — you can play with two tight ends at the same time. Maybe even three.”

While Mayer’s 2024 stat line was modest — 21 receptions, 156 yards — he’s reportedly looked sharp this spring. During minicamp, he hauled in a touchdown from Geno Smith and impressed in red zone drills. Smith’s presence, along with Bowers, Jakobi Meyers, and rising back Ashton Jeanty, could create more opportunities in two-tight-end sets.

Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Vinny Bonsignore called Mayer’s previous usage “mind boggling,” underscoring a widespread feeling that his talent has been underutilized.

Mayer may still be fighting for snaps, but he’s earned a second look. In a contract year, and with Carroll’s system valuing versatile tight ends, 2025 could be Mayer’s turning point — or a final audition before seeking a fresh start elsewhere. Either way, the Raiders’ new regime seems poised to finally give him the shot he’s been waiting for.
