The Las Vegas Raiders have experienced another setback in free agency with the departure of safety Tre’von Moehrig. According to Fox Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, Moehrig has agreed to a three-year, $51 million contract with the Carolina Panthers.
Moehrig, a highly regarded safety, was a prominent figure in the free-agent market after a strong four-year stint with the Raiders. During his time in Las Vegas, he started 64 games, amassing 297 tackles, 29 passes defended, and six interceptions.
Las Vegas Raiders Must Now Replace Tre’von Moehrig

The former second-round pick from Texas Christian University delivered his most impressive season in 2024, recording 104 tackles, a career-high 10 passes defended, and two interceptions. He maintained a consistent presence on the field, starting every game for the Raiders in both 2023 and 2024.
CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco ranked Moehrig as the 22nd-best free agent available. “Trevon Moehrig, a former second-round pick, is coming off his best season,” Prisco noted. “He started all 17 games and had two picks and did a nice job in the run game. He turns 26 in June, so he is the target age for teams looking for a starting safety.”
Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports provided further analysis, stating, “Moehrig is somewhat of a tricky evaluation due to his playing on mostly dismal Las Vegas Raiders defenses, but the production and physical tools are solid. A second-round pick out of TCU in 2021, he’s improved every year at the NFL level, stepping up with a career-high 104 tackles and 10 pass breakups in 2024, when the Raiders lost fellow safety Marcus Epps to injury. Moehrig has also been durable, missing just two games in four seasons, making him ripe for a sizable payday as someone’s No. 1.” Benjamin ranked Moehrig as the second-best free agent safety available.
Raiders head coach Pete Carroll had previously emphasized that retaining defensive free agents would be a top priority. While the team seemed poised to retain Moehrig, along with linebacker Robert Spillane, defensive end Malcolm Koonce, and cornerback Nate Hobbs, Moehrig’s departure represents a significant loss for the Raiders’ defense.
