Las Vegas Raiders Spotted Do-It-All Mentality That Most Teams Missed

Tommy Mellott, who started 41 games as quarterback at Montana State, is embracing a position change as he enters the NFL. Drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the sixth round, Mellott will transition to wide receiver, a move he accepts with a team-first mentality.

Mellott emphasizes his willingness to contribute in any way possible to secure a roster spot. “My entire career at quarterback has been a do-it-all individual as well,” Mellott stated. “I played special teams the entire first year, I played wide receiver, I played wildcat quarterback, I really did it all.” He added, “And then eventually, those wildcat reps, they wanted me out there so much I became the starter. That’s what I’m going to be about when I get down to Las Vegas. Just be a do-it-all kind of guy, who’s going to perfect his craft, whatever is expected of me, do that and more.”

Mellott draws inspiration from Julian Edelman, who similarly transitioned from college quarterback to NFL receiver. He notes Edelman’s early success as a punt returner, which helped him gain attention and make the New England Patriots’ roster. “Very few teams were really interested in me, it seemed like,” Mellott said. “I wasn’t a clear-cut quarterback… To get drafted is an honor and a privilege. The work is not even close to being done. I’m excited to go there and prove that I can contribute.”

Mellott views his versatility as an asset and is prepared to return to special teams or take on any other role to make the team in Las Vegas. “I’m excited to give everything I’ve got and go help the Raiders,” he said, expressing his appreciation for the opportunity.
