The Los Angeles Rams’ Secondary Needs Its Alpha Back To Win This Season

The Los Angeles Rams have a cornerback conundrum on their hands. After the most recent NFL Draft came and went without a single cornerback selection, the Rams’ secondary is looking perilously thin.

For a team that just a few seasons ago hoisted the Lombardi Trophy, this is a glaring issue. The solution? Bring Jalen Ramsey back to Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Rams CB Room: Aging Starters, Unproven Backups

The Los Angeles Rams’ current depth chart at cornerback looks like this:

  • Darious Williams – Starting
  • Ahkello Witherspoon – Starting
  • Derion Kendrick – Backup
  • Cobie Durant – Backup
  • Quentin Lake– Hybrid CB/S Role

Williams and Witherspoon are veterans who can hold their own, but both are better suited as zone pieces, not primary shutdown corners. Williams is 31 years old and more of a crafty technician than a physical eraser. Witherspoon is an experienced boundary defender but has battled inconsistency for years.

Behind them, the drop-off is steep. Derion Kendrick has struggled mightily against speed and double moves. Cobie Durant has shown flashes, especially in the slot, but asking him to take on No. 1 receivers consistently is a gamble.

The Rams need smart, adaptable, top-end coverage players to match up with a conference stacked with elite wideouts. Right now, they simply do not have one.

Pros Of A Jalen Ramsey Reunion

  • Shutdown Ability: The Rams have no true CB1 right now. Ramsey would step in and immediately lock down the opponent’s top target.
  • Leadership: This secondary needs a voice. Ramsey brings playoff experience, swagger, and accountability that elevate everyone around him.
  • Scheme Fit: Chris Shula’s system demands players who can handle multiple roles. Ramsey mastered boundary, slot, and hybrid positions before. He can do it again.
  • Championship DNA: No other DB on the Rams’ roster has made winning plays deep in January. Ramsey has.

Cons Of A Jalen Ramsey Reunion

  • Age: Ramsey is 30, entering his ninth season. At some point, corners lose a step, though there is no sign of it yet.
  • Injury Risk: His 2023 injury was serious, but his comeback was strong. Still, every knee injury carries long-term concern.
  • Cost: He carries a big contract. The Rams would need to work cap magic or negotiate with Miami.
