The Los Angeles Rams have become known for a lot of things. As of late, one of the more common threads under the Les Snead/Sean McVay regime is their knack for identifying late-round college prospects in the NFL Draft and developing them into pro stars. Puka Nacua, Kyren Williams, Kobie Turner, and Byron Young are recent examples.
While the Rams traded out of the first round in the 2025 NFL Draft, they still ended up with six selections, including four in the final day of the process. One of those selections, Konata Mumpfield, the 242nd overall pick in the seventh round, is already drawing heavy praise from his new head coach, Sean McVay.
“He’s doing a great job,” McVay said. “I think you’re right, you see him making a lot of plays. He’s a mature rookie. He’s a guy that is wired to be able to separate. I think he’s catching the football really well. He’s really smart and conscientious. He’s moving around, can do a lot of different things but you’re right. He’s one of the guys that has really shined with some of those younger guys. He continues to be able to just answer the bell with the opportunities that he’s gotten. And Stetson’s (Bennett) done a nice job being able to get the football to him but been really pleased with him. He’s doing a heck of a job.”
Any time a player, especially one on offense, can stick out to his head coach that much, it means he’s doing a great job. Yet, for a seventh-round selection like Mumpfield to generate so much early attention, well, it gives him an early advantage over the other receivers vying for the final roster spot on the Rams.
The Rams’ top three receiver positions are already set with Nacua, Davante Adams, and Tutu Atwell. But who knows? Perhaps Mumpfield can prove to his coaches and teammates that he deserves to be the next number called by Matthew Stafford when it’s time for the next man up to make a play. So far, Mumpfield’s off to a great start.
