Rams Reveal ‘Weird, Freak’ Injury After Trading For Cornerback, Status Uncertain for Week 8

The Los Angeles Rams are managing a new injury concern at cornerback, as Darious Williams sustained what head coach Sean McVay described as a “weird, freak” shoulder injury late in the Week 7 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“It’s almost like a strain in his shoulder and in his lat,” McVay explained. “It’s kind of an abnormal deal that typically – it’s a very abnormal type of injury, but it is something that you need to be cognizant of and certain movements and things that we’re asked to do, especially from the corner spot, where it does kind of just trigger it.”

Williams rehabbed during the Week 8 bye, and the team will continue to monitor his progress ahead of Sunday’s home game against the New Orleans Saints. McVay noted that while they are keeping the “doors open for him going this week,” the organization has a contingency plan ready if Williams is unable to play.

The injury comes shortly after the Rams made a decisive move to bolster their secondary, acquiring cornerback Roger McCreary from the Tennessee Titans ahead of the NFL trade deadline. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Los Angeles sent a conditional fifth/sixth-round pick swap to Tennessee, with the Titans receiving the fifth-round pick closer to the start of the round, while the Rams received a sixth-round pick positioned near the end.

McCreary’s arrival provides immediate depth and versatility in the defensive backfield, allowing the Rams to navigate Williams’ uncertain status while maintaining competitiveness in the NFC West.
