The Los Angeles Rams may be set at quarterback for now, but discussions around their long-term signal-caller have started circulating. Matthew Stafford continues to play at a high level, Jimmy Garoppolo offers a reliable backup, and Stetson Bennett showed promise in the preseason. Still, the question of a future successor looms, and one name has emerged: Indianapolis Colts’ Anthony Richardson.
Recently, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler suggested the QB of the future just might end up being Anthony Richardson from the Indianapolis Colts
Rams Trade Rumors: Anthony Richardson’s Situation in Indianapolis

Richardson lost the Week 1 starting battle to Daniel Jones, a move that raised eyebrows both locally and nationally. Despite the setback, Richardson’s agent, Deiric Jackson, met with Colts GM Chris Ballard to “let feelings be known” in a constructive conversation, though no trade request was made.
“Ballard reinforced that Indy has no plans to trade Richardson and still believes in the quarterback,” Fowler reported.
Richardson has publicly acknowledged growing pains early in his career, including limited starting experience and leadership adjustments, but has also demonstrated potential with two fourth-quarter comebacks and offseason improvements in mechanics, conditioning, and decision-making.
“Richardson isn’t making any waves — he will remain professional, backing up Jones and maintaining his readiness,” Fowler added.
Why the Rams Make Sense
While there are no reports directly linking Richardson to the Rams, his representatives reportedly view Sean McVay as a “premier playcaller” who could help develop his raw skills. McVay’s track record is compelling: he revived Baker Mayfield’s career mid-season and helped Matthew Stafford secure a Super Bowl victory. For Richardson, learning under McVay could provide the perfect reset.
Stafford, now 37, recently returned to practice after an aggravated disc in his back, and though he looked good in drills, McVay remains cautious.
“It was good to be able to have Matthew out there. He did a good job today. I thought he looked good, but we’re going to keep it a day and really a week at a time,” McVay said.
With Puka Nacua and Davante Adams under contract beyond Stafford, the Rams offer both protection and weapons for a developing quarterback.
The Trade Scenario
Speculation suggests a possible move could see Richardson heading to Los Angeles for a third-round pick — a modest price for a potential future starter. While Indianapolis is not actively seeking a trade, the Rams represent a low-risk option to address a looming positional need.
“If they are serious about solving their future quarterback problem before it even starts, they should call the Colts immediately,” Fowler noted.
The situation remains fluid, but Richardson to the Rams is emerging as one of the NFL’s most intriguing potential trades heading into the season
