The Los Angeles Rams enter Week 1 with their cornerback unit already under scrutiny, and Sunday’s opener against the Houston Texans may offer an early glimpse of how much this group can bend before it breaks. News that Texans wide receiver Christian Kirk will miss the game with a hamstring strain changes the matchup calculus, but it doesn’t erase the concerns surrounding a Rams secondary leaning on aging veterans and developing youth.

The Texans’ passing attack has been dealt a blow, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Christian Kirk’s strained hamstring is expected to sideline him for at least Week 1, and possibly longer. Houston is expected to be “cautious” with Kirk’s recovery, with one source estimating a two-week absence.
Adding to the challenge, Braxton Berrios also missed Thursday’s pivotal practice with a hamstring injury. Thursday sessions are typically the most demanding of the week, and historically, players absent then rarely suit up on Sunday. Berrios had been penciled in as the Texans’ primary returner and a rotational slot receiver.
That leaves Houston looking to rookies. Jaylin Noel, a third-round pick out of Iowa State with 4.39 speed and reliable hands, is expected to see meaningful snaps. KPRC 2 Sports’ Aaron Wilson noted that Noel “figures heavily into the replacement plan” if Kirk sits. Noel topped 1,000 receiving yards in his final college season and has drawn praise for his quick adjustment to the NFL. His ability to create separation underneath could be vital for sustaining drives, particularly on third down.
Another rookie, Jayden Higgins, offers size and downfield potential, while Xavier Hutchinson remains in the mix. Still, it’s clear the Texans’ plan to lean on Kirk as a reliable WR2 has been derailed, and quarterback C.J. Stroud will be asked to elevate less proven options behind top target Nico Collins.
Rams’ Cornerback Picture

Los Angeles hasn’t added outside reinforcements at cornerback, despite questions about the depth and ceiling of the group. At the moment, two 30-somethings — Ahkello Witherspoon and Darious Williams (32) — are expected to take on regular roles.
Witherspoon, who played 58% of snaps last season after starting five of 13 games, represents a drop-off from his 94% workload the year before. Williams offers steady veteran insurance, but he’s not a long-term answer.
Behind them, the Rams are betting on upside. Former Commanders first-round pick Emmanuel Forbes has been given a full offseason to reset after falling out of favor quickly in Washington, while Cobie Durant, who started 14 games in 2024, looks like a roster lock. Still, this unit doesn’t feature an established lockdown option — making it a position to monitor throughout the year.
Matchup Outlook

For the Rams, the absence of Kirk may seem like a reprieve, but it also presents a different kind of challenge. Rather than defending a seasoned veteran with polish in the slot, Los Angeles corners may be tasked with tracking a rookie debutant like Noel — whose speed could stress the unit in ways less predictable on tape.
Witherspoon and Williams bring experience, but Forbes and Durant will need to prove they can hold their own against a Texans offense that will likely scheme quick-hitting plays to counter the Rams’ aggressive front. If Houston finds rhythm with its young receivers, the Rams’ cornerback depth will be tested immediately.
Bottom Line
The Texans will enter Week 1 without one of their top weapons, but the Rams’ cornerbacks still face an uncertain proving ground. Houston’s wide receiver shuffle creates opportunity for rookies like Noel to shine, while Los Angeles must find stability in a secondary built on a mix of veterans nearing the twilight of their careers and youngsters still searching for consistency.
The result could define how both teams are viewed moving forward: whether the Texans can survive injuries to their receiving corps, and whether the Rams’ cornerbacks can withstand the kind of scrutiny that already feels like it will shadow them all season.
