Rams Rookie Gets 1st Big Opportunity After Latest Injury Update

The Los Angeles Rams have been searching for a difference-maker at tight end, and Sunday’s matchup with the Tennessee Titans could provide rookie Terrance Ferguson his first real chance to show what he can do.

With longtime starter Tyler Higbee nearing the back end of his career and offseason addition Colby Parkinson sidelined by a shoulder injury, the second-round pick out of Oregon may be called upon to step into a meaningful role for the first time in the regular season.

Ferguson isn’t a carbon copy of the Rams’ other tight ends. At 6-foot-5 with above-average speed, he brings an element that can stretch defenses vertically and “take the cap off” opposing secondaries. While Higbee has long been a steady presence and Parkinson offers blocking strength, Ferguson’s profile leans more toward a modern hybrid — a weapon who can stress linebackers and safeties in coverage.

So far, his impact has been limited to special teams. The coaching staff has been careful not to rush him into the offense, particularly after a groin injury kept him out of valuable reps during training camp. Still, his progress behind the scenes has not gone unnoticed.

McVay on Ferguson’s Role

Head coach Sean McVay acknowledged Friday that Ferguson could be in line for a bigger opportunity against the Titans.

“It could. I think a lot of it depends on how the game unfolds,” McVay said. “We have some different packages, different personnel groupings that we can activate. Terrance is a guy that we want to be able to figure out where we can start to allow him to find his role and continue to grow. He did miss some valuable time with that groin. I thought he did a nice job with the things that he could control last week. He’s had a couple good weeks of practice so that is something that could be a possibility.”

Earlier in the week, McVay reinforced the organization’s long-term belief in the rookie’s potential:

“Terrance is a guy that we want to be able to figure out where we can start and to be able to allow him to be able to find his role and continue to grow.”

First Real Test

Inside the Rams’ building, there’s optimism that Ferguson can eventually become a complete tight end — someone who contributes in both the passing game and run blocking. Coaches and teammates have spoken highly of his practice performances, noting his willingness to learn and ability to make plays when given the chance.

The rookie is also eager to get on the field after watching from the sidelines for part of training camp. His hunger and athletic upside may make him the kind of spark the Rams have been lacking at the position.

This weekend could serve as Ferguson’s first real test — not only to show flashes of his skillset, but to prove he’s ready to handle live-game responsibilities against a rugged Titans defense. If he delivers, Los Angeles might just find itself with a new piece to build around at tight end.
