Rams Double Down on Critical Special Teams Decision Ahead Of Crucial NFC West Clash

The Los Angeles Rams appear to have found stability in one of their most unpredictable areas this season: the kicking game. After a flawless debut performance, rookie kicker Harrison Mevis — affectionately known as “The Thiccer Kicker” — will remain the team’s starter moving forward.

Mevis Seizes His Moment

According to Greg Beacham of the Associated Press, Mevis will keep the starting job over Joshua Karty, though Karty will remain on the roster. The decision follows Mevis’ perfect 6-for-6 showing on extra points in the Rams’ decisive win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Head coach Sean McVay confirmed Monday that Mevis will again handle kicking duties this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. Though Mevis was formally reverted to the practice squad as a procedural move, McVay emphasized that he will be elevated to the active roster before game day.

“It’s about being able to consistently replicate that success with the surrounding factors,” McVay said. “And I thought he did a heck of a job going six-for-six.”

Mevis, 23, earned his nickname during his college days at Missouri, where his 5-foot-11, 243-pound frame stood out among typical kickers. But his performance was even more notable — connecting on 84 percent of his field goals across four seasons. After going undrafted in 2024, Mevis bounced between the Carolina Panthers, New York Jets, and Birmingham Stallions of the UFL, where he drilled 20 of 21 field goals, including five from beyond 50 yards.

Now, Mevis seems to have found a home in Los Angeles. His poise under pressure and consistent mechanics have given the Rams a spark in an area that’s cost them valuable points this season.

McVay Balances Confidence and Competition

Despite Karty’s struggles — hitting just 66.7 percent of his field goals and missing three extra points — McVay was quick to defend the young kicker’s long-term potential.

“I have a lot of belief in Josh Karty,” McVay said. “I think he’s a guy that’s going to have an incredibly bright future. We’re going to continue to work with him.”

Still, McVay made it clear that production drives opportunity. For now, Mevis has earned the job — and the Rams are hoping his steady leg can finally solve one of their few lingering inconsistencies.
