Rams Cornerback Suffers Tough Twist in Debut

The Los Angeles Rams’ effort to stabilize their banged-up secondary took an unfortunate turn on Sunday Night Football, as cornerback Roger McCreary exited the matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a hip injury. According to The Orange County Register’s Adam Grosbard, McCreary was deemed “questionable to return” in what was his first meaningful defensive action since arriving in Los Angeles.

His opportunity came quickly. With Quentin Lake sidelined by an elbow injury suffered last week, McCreary was thrust into snaps the Rams urgently needed to be covered. Instead, Los Angeles was left scrambling again, turning to Josh Wallace and Jaylen McCollough to absorb additional workload in the secondary.

The Rams acquired McCreary from the Tennessee Titans just before the NFL trade deadline, structuring a pick-swap deal designed to fortify a vulnerable cornerback room as they entered their Week 8 bye at 5–2. The move was a clear signal of intent from general manager Les Snead, who—per The Athletic’s Dianna Russini—was among several contenders “making calls for a corner.”

McCreary arrived with a reputation for versatility, capable of working both outside and in the slot. Through seven games with Tennessee, he logged 18 tackles and one interception, though his 2025 coverage data painted a complicated picture. He struggled significantly in man coverage, allowing a 100% completion rate when targeted, but showed stronger reps in press looks, where his physicality at the line became an asset.

What the Injury Means Going Forward

For a defense already operating without Lake and Ahkello Witherspoon and juggling rotations around Cobie Durant, Darious Williams, Emmanuel Forbes and Wallace McCreary’s injury lands at a difficult time. The Rams made the trade to deepen their playoff push; instead, they’re once again testing the limits of their secondary depth.

Los Angeles will await further evaluation on McCreary’s hip, hoping this setback is temporary—because the need for his snaps isn’t going away anytime soon.
