Rams Star Steps in Hot Water On Latest Livestream

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua could be heading into one of the most important games of the season with more than just football on his mind. The second-year star may be facing discipline from the NFL after publicly criticizing league officials during a livestream appearance Tuesday night.

While appearing on a stream with internet personalities Adin Ross and N3on, Nacua did not hold back when discussing officiating across the league. His comments, captured and shared widely on social media, quickly raised eyebrows given the NFL’s strict stance on public criticism of referees.

“The refs are the worst,” Nacua said. “Some of the rules aren’t… These guys are lawyers. They want to be on TV too. You don’t think he’s texting his friends in the group chat like, ‘Yo, you guys just saw me on Sunday Night Football. That wasn’t P.I., but I called it.’”

A Fine Likely, Not a Suspension

History suggests the league will not ignore those remarks. The NFL routinely fines players and coaches who publicly question the integrity or competence of officials, even when similar frustrations are shared privately around the league.

In December 2023, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid were fined a combined $150,000 after criticizing officiating following a playoff loss. Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon was also fined $25,000 earlier this year for comments directed at officials, though that fine was later rescinded.

Given that precedent, a fine for Nacua feels more like a matter of “when” than “if.” With the Rams set to play on Thursday night, any formal notice from the league could arrive after Week 16 concludes.

Importantly for Los Angeles, discipline is unlikely to extend beyond a financial penalty. The NFL does not typically suspend players for verbal criticism of officials, meaning Nacua’s availability against Seattle should not be impacted.

Rams Need Nacua on the Field

That matters because the Rams will need their star wideout at full throttle. Los Angeles enters Thursday’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks tied atop the NFC West at 11–3, with first place on the line in prime time.

Nacua has been the engine of a Rams offense that has surged down the stretch. With Matthew Stafford distributing the ball confidently and the unit finding balance through the air and on the ground, Los Angeles has emerged as one of the NFC’s most dangerous teams.

His role could grow even larger this week. Davante Adams is unlikely to play due to injury, placing even more responsibility on Nacua and the rest of the receiving corps. Earlier this season, when Nacua missed time, Adams stepped up. Now, the roles may be reversed.

Frustration Amid Success

From a football standpoint, things are going well for Nacua. He continues to produce at a high level and has become the clear focal point of the Rams’ passing game. But the frustration he aired publicly hints at the emotional edge he plays with — one that fuels his competitiveness, but can also lead to moments like this.

When asked during the stream whether referees really might be making calls for attention, Nacua tried to soften the take slightly.

“I mean, these guys are normal human beings too, bro,” he said.

That nuance may not matter to the league office, but it reflects a player speaking candidly in an unfiltered setting — something the NFL has little tolerance for when officials are involved.

All Eyes on Thursday Night

If a fine does come, it will be little more than a footnote compared to what’s at stake on the field. The Rams and Seahawks meet on “Thursday Night Football” with control of the NFC West hanging in the balance.

For Nacua, the focus now shifts back to football. Whether lighter in the wallet or not, the Rams will be counting on him to deliver when it matters most.
