The Los Angeles Rams’ path to the top of the NFC officially closed Sunday, even before they took the field in Week 17. Wins by both the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers eliminated L.A. from contention for the NFC West crown and the conference’s No. 1 seed.
The turning point came a week earlier. Los Angeles’ overtime loss to Seattle in Week 16 cracked open the door, and Sunday’s results slammed it shut. Seattle handled Carolina, while San Francisco escaped Chicago with a last-minute victory — outcomes that ensured the Rams could no longer catch either rival in the division race.
It’s a stark shift for a team that was the first NFC club to clinch a postseason berth and, not long ago, controlled its destiny for both the division and home-field advantage.

Reality No. 1: The Preferred Path as the No. 5 Seed

Despite losing the top seed, the Rams still hold a favorable playoff scenario if they take care of business. By winning their final two games — Monday night against the Falcons in Atlanta and the Week 18 finale at home against the Cardinals — Los Angeles would lock in the NFC’s No. 5 seed.
That position matters. The No. 5 seed draws the NFC South champion in the wild-card round, a division winner that will finish 9–8 or worse. Instead of facing a fellow NFC heavyweight, the Rams would open the postseason against either Tampa Bay or Carolina, a significantly more manageable matchup on paper.

Reality No. 2: Slipping to the No. 6 Seed — and a Tougher Road
If the Rams stumble against Atlanta, the margin for error disappears. A loss Monday night would force L.A. to beat Arizona in Week 18 and rely on Seattle defeating San Francisco to reclaim the No. 5 seed. Any other outcome drops the Rams to No. 6.
That would mean a far more difficult wild-card opponent and likely a road-heavy playoff run — a steep price after missed opportunities against both the Seahawks and 49ers earlier this season.

A Contender Still on the Road
Even as one of the NFL’s best teams in 2025, the Rams now face a reality where a Super Bowl LX run may require winning multiple games away from SoFi Stadium. The margin is thin, the stakes are clear, and Monday night in Atlanta will determine which playoff reality Los Angeles lives with.
