San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy’s status for Thursday night’s clash against the Los Angeles Rams remains uncertain, sending betting odds on a dramatic shift. After opening as three-point underdogs, the 49ers are now 5.5-point underdogs at DraftKings, a 2.5-point swing since Sunday night.
Purdy missed two games earlier this season with toe and shoulder injuries and returned in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns but also tossed two interceptions and lost a fumble, culminating in a 26-21 defeat. Despite the performance, Purdy told reporters the injuries weren’t to blame.
“No,” Purdy said when asked if his ailments affected him. “Just getting back out there and throwing and getting into a rhythm, being down two weeks, coming back and feeling out my body. I don’t know the answer to [if the injury affected his mechanics].”
Head coach Kyle Shanahan echoed that sentiment. “You can ask him; I don’t think so. We all got to do better. He had some good plays today, but we all got to do better,” Shanahan said, acknowledging the turnovers that ultimately decided the game.
Brock Purdy Injury Backup Plan; Mac Jones Stands Ready

Should Purdy be unable to suit up, veteran Mac Jones is poised to step in. Jones has already led the team to a 2-0 record this season and boasts a 66.3% completion rate with a 4-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. His experience could stabilize the 49ers’ offense on a short week against a Rams squad that is 2-0 against the spread as home favorites.
Purdy’s inconsistent play at Levi’s Stadium over the past eight starts, including 13 turnovers and just 23.3 points per game, underscores the challenge San Francisco faces. Shanahan noted the offense’s struggles with consistency: “We moved the ball but really killed ourselves with four different turnovers.”
Impact on Rams and Betting Lines
The Rams, also 3-1 this season, have seen the line swing in their favor as uncertainty over Purdy grows. Vegas oddsmakers appear to be factoring both his injury and the short turnaround between games.
Purdy, while frustrated with his mistakes, remains focused on improvement. “Our defense just played their butt off and gave us a chance. We had an opportunity to take a shot, and the ball goes on the ground. I was mad about everything,” he said.
As the NFC West tightens, Purdy’s toe injury and potential absence loom large, not only for San Francisco’s playoff aspirations but also for the betting landscape heading into Thursday night.
