Rams Conservative Decision Led To Huge Win Probabilty Swing, Says Analytics Expert

When the Los Angeles Rams reflect on their 26-23 overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers, one play will stand out: a fourth-and-1 from the Rams’ own 39-yard line with the game tied late in the fourth quarter. Instead of putting the ball in Matthew Stafford’s hands, head coach Sean McVay opted for a run with Kyren Williams, who had already struggled earlier in the game. The result was predictable—Williams was stopped short, and the 49ers celebrated on the Rams’ turf.

ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell highlighted the risk of McVay’s approach: “McVay’s conservative decision-making…cost the Rams 7 percentage points of win probability with the decision to punt,” Barnwell noted, emphasizing that the choice reflected a pattern that has plagued Los Angeles this season. Indeed, even models that favor aggressive fourth-down play indicated going for it would have been the better choice.

McVay acknowledged his error after the game. “Bad call by me,” he said. “Thought about maybe trying to draw them offsides, I took one [timeout], they took the other. It was a poor decision by me right there…The play selection was very poor. I’m sick right now because I put our players in a shitty spot.”

While Stafford had one of his best games, completing 30-of-47 passes for 389 yards and three touchdowns, the play call failed to maximize the team’s strengths. Analysts noted that a jet sweep to Puka Nacua or a pass to one of the Rams’ top receivers might have secured the first down, a far less predictable option than the inside run McVay chose.

Despite the misstep, Stafford supported the decision to go for it. “I love that we went for it. We’re not playing for a tie…just wish we would have kept the drive alive,” he said. Yet, the loss leaves the Rams 3-2, trailing the 49ers in the NFC West, and illustrates the consequences of conservative play-calling in high-leverage moments.

McVay’s willingness to take responsibility is clear, but as Barnwell pointed out, the larger issue remains: Los Angeles’ head coach continues to let risk-averse tendencies dictate critical situations, with the team’s playoff positioning now hanging in the balance.
