Insider Breaks Down Los Angeles Rams Salary Cap After Cooper Kupp Decision

Cooper Kupp’s remarkable eight-season tenure with the Los Angeles Rams has concluded, marked by his departure during the 2025 NFL free-agency period. His time with the Rams was highlighted by a Super Bowl LVI MVP award, cementing his legacy as a key contributor to the team’s championship success. However, the decision to part ways was ultimately driven by salary cap considerations.

As early as February, the Rams explored potential trade options for Kupp. Ultimately, the franchise opted to officially release him on Wednesday. This move, as detailed by ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, significantly frees up cap space for the Rams, allowing them greater financial flexibility moving forward.

“Rams now officially have released WR Cooper Kupp. They are designating Kupp as a post-June 1 cut, keeping his $29.78 million cap hit until June,” Schefter posted on X.

Following Kupp’s release, Schefter provided further details regarding the financial implications for the Rams salary cap. Schefter’s analysis included specific dollar figures, illustrating the significant cap space freed up by the Rams’ decision.

“At that point, they will take on dead cap hits of $14.78 million in 2025 and $7.48 million in 2026 while creating $15 million in cap space,” Schefter added.

As of Wednesday, March 12th, OvertheCap sets the Rams at $38.9 million under the cap with Kupp as a June 1st cut.

After weeks of swirling trade rumors, the Rams have officially released wide receiver Kupp, as reported by NFL insider Tom Pelissero. This move immediately places Kupp at the forefront of the wide receiver free agent market, where he is expected to draw significant interest as the free agency period progresses.

Kupp’s tenure with the Rams was marked by exceptional productivity, particularly during the team’s Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022. However, recent seasons have been marred by increasing injury concerns, making his $20 million per year contract less appealing to potential trade partners.

The Rams’ emergence of Puka Nacua as a premier receiver, coupled with the recent acquisition of free agent Davante Adams, likely factored into their decision to release Kupp. Kupp himself had previously disclosed the Rams’ intent to trade him, and the team’s inability to secure a suitable trade offer ultimately led to his release.

Several contending teams could benefit from adding Kupp to their roster. These include the Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, Washington Commanders, and the Kansas City Chiefs, who are seeking stability in their receiving corps.
