Sean McVay Provides Injury Update On Rams RB With Perfect 2024 Attendance

The Los Angeles Rams are well known for not dedicating extra resources to the preseason game slate. Sean McVay has been a leader in how he treats his starters in August, giving them every preseason game off. For all of the critics, the coach now has a starting roster devoid of injuries resulting from Week 1 of the preseason. However, that doesn’t mean the entire roster is unscathed.

Multiple players were injured in the Stetson Bennett coming-out party against the Dallas Cowboys, including running back Ronnie Rivers, who suffered a rib injury. McVay spoke about how the running back is doing, giving a mixed update, per Rams Wire in an Aug. 11 report.

“Ronnie Rivers got his ribs, so he’ll be out for a little bit of time. Glad that he’s doing fine,” McVay said.

Wide receiver Konata Mumpfield and tight end Anthony Torres also suffered injuries in the contest. Mumpfield appears to be healthy enough not to miss time, while Torres will be out for “a little bit,” McVay said.

Rivers doesn’t appear to be set to miss a large chunk of the season, but there will be a recovery period preventing him from getting back on the field seemingly for at least the Week 2 showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers. It’s a new development the running back did not need, as he is coming off his first season in which he logged a perfect 17 games of action. Additionally, many already see Rivers as the underdog in a stacked running back room.

The room features Kyren Williams, Blake Corum, Jarquez Hunter, and Rivers. Williams and Hunter appear to be shoo-ins to make the roster, leaving Corum and Rivers to compete for the potential final spot. Corum had a solid day against the Dallas Cowboys, earning two touchdowns on the ground, which gives him solid footing heading into Week 2.

Hunter also led the team in carries and finished with more yards per carry than Corum. Rivers had two carries for nine yards and left the game with an injury, which makes it clear that he is trailing at the moment, at least in part due to unfortunate circumstances.

It will be up to Rivers to pull out every stop he can to get back on the field in Week 3 of the preseason against (potentially) Shedeur Sanders and the Cleveland Browns. With a renewed national interest in Sanders seemingly taking place, Rivers can win over public opinion in a big way with a huge day. However, he, of course, will have every reason to push for a return against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday, Aug. 16.
