The Los Angeles Rams coaching staff has become a consistent target for other NFL teams, with Sean McVay frequently seeing his assistants depart for coordinator or head coaching positions. This trend, while a reflection of the Rams’ successful culture, inevitably impacts the players on the roster. Quentin Lake, who recently completed his third NFL season, has experienced this coaching turnover firsthand.
However, Lake is grateful for the relative stability the Rams’ defensive staff has achieved for the 2025 season. Chris Shula returns as the defensive coordinator, and a significant portion of his coaching group remains intact.
In a recent appearance on the “Under Further Review” podcast, Lake emphasized the crucial benefits of coaching continuity, a factor often underestimated by fans and external observers. He highlighted how consistent coaching relationships contribute to player development and team cohesion.
Los Angeles Rams Coaching Continuity

“Didn’t have too many coaching changes this year. People don’t understand. When you don’t have any coaching changes, that is huge in the NFL,” Lake said. “Not having to deal with a new system, knowing familiar faces, knowing the coaches know how you play, and the communication that goes on, too.”
Lake experienced a notable progression from his second to third year in the NFL, evolving into a consistent presence on the Los Angeles Rams’ defense, serving as their defensive signal caller. His increased role was evident in his near-perfect attendance, playing every defensive snap throughout the season, with the sole exception being the final game when the Rams opted to rest their starters.
Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Lake is positioned to continue his upward trajectory. With sustained health, he is confident in his ability to further develop his skills and contribute even more significantly in his fourth year.
“I say that to be, like, the gradual increase should be easier because I’m not dealing with all that stuff, as well,” he said. “I’m healthy, as well, so that’s a big thing. I was dealing with injuries early on in my career. Always just trying to be on the up and up. The journey has been good, it’s been tough, but I’m in a great spot right now.”
