Sean McVay, head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, has left open the possibility of Cooper Kupp remaining with the team in 2025. When questioned about the likelihood of Kupp’s return, McVay told reporters, “I would never speak in absolutes,” as documented by Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times.
On February 3rd, Kupp publicly disclosed via social media that the Rams had informed him they were actively seeking trade opportunities.
“I don’t agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA,” Kupp wrote in the post.
Cooper Kupp Decision Not Absolute For Los Angeles Rams Head Coach

Cooper Kupp’s substantial contract, which includes $20 million in 2025 and $19.85 million in 2026 (per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo), could deter potential trade partners. Notably, the Rams did not approach Kupp about restructuring his contract before informing him of their intention to explore trade options, as reported by Jourdan Rodrigue.
While the financial implications of his contract might discourage teams from acquiring him via trade, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee his return to Los Angeles. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network has suggested the “possibility” of the Rams releasing Kupp if they are unable to find a suitable trade partner.
Kupp, at 31 years old, has dedicated his entire eight-year NFL career to the Los Angeles Rams. His 2021 season stands as a testament to his exceptional talent, during which he led the league with 1,947 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns.
However, subsequent seasons have been marred by injuries, restricting Kupp’s appearances to fewer than 12 regular-season games in each of the past three years. In 2024, he recorded 67 receptions for 710 yards and six touchdowns.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Kupp’s future with the Rams, head coach Sean McVay has refrained from definitively ruling out the possibility of the veteran receiver remaining with the organization for the 2025 season.
