Los Angeles Rams Share Matthew Stafford Injury Update After 2nd Consecutive Practice

The Los Angeles Rams’ most important storyline this preseason has finally taken a positive turn. After sitting out most of training camp with a lingering back injury, quarterback Matthew Stafford has returned to the practice field — and for two consecutive days.

“Matthew Stafford is participating in team drills for the second day in a row,” reported Sarah Barshop of ESPN, a sign that the 37-year-old is regaining form just in time for the regular season opener against the Houston Texans on September 7.

For the Rams, Stafford’s availability is critical. The two-time Pro Bowler threw for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns last year while completing nearly 66 percent of his passes, a performance that carried Los Angeles back to the playoffs before their run ended in a hard-fought loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional Round. With a retooled offense featuring Puka Nacua, newcomer Davante Adams, and the departure of Cooper Kupp, Stafford remains the engine of Sean McVay’s system. Without him, the Rams’ chances of competing in the NFC West would diminish significantly.

Still, optimism is tempered by uncertainty. McVay himself made that clear when asked whether Stafford would definitely be ready for Week 1. “I think that would be putting the cart way before the horse,” McVay said. “We’re going to keep it a day and really a week at a time. . . . We’re truly taking it a day at a time and a week at a time right now. . . . We’re trying to do right by the player number one and our team.”

That cautious tone highlights the complexity of Stafford’s situation. While he looked sharp in his return — taking roughly 26 snaps during team drills on Monday and completing a full workload Tuesday without setback — the Rams know that the real test will come when he begins absorbing hits in live action.

As McVay explained, “There were a lot of things that we had talked about at the beginning and it’s gone a little bit differently than what we had planned. I think the right thing to do for everybody involved is to truly take it a day at a time. . . . It’s a very fluid situation that demands flexibility as well.”

That fluidity underscores why the Rams remain cautious despite encouraging signs. Back injuries are notoriously unpredictable, particularly for a quarterback entering his 16th NFL season. Stafford has proven remarkably resilient in his career, often playing through pain, but managing his health now could be the difference between another playoff run and a season derailed.

For now, Los Angeles has reason to be hopeful. Stafford’s ability to string together practices without setbacks suggests progress. If that continues over the next three weeks, the Rams will open their season with their Super Bowl-winning leader under center.

The question is whether the organization’s patient approach will be enough to keep Stafford on the field all year. As McVay noted, the Rams are focused not just on Week 1, but on ensuring their quarterback can withstand the grind of a full season.

And that, as always with Matthew Stafford, will depend on whether his toughness can once again outlast his injuries.
