The Los Angeles Rams’ hopes of reuniting with star cornerback Jalen Ramsey appear to be dimming, as head coach Sean McVay acknowledged several significant hurdles standing in the way of a deal.
Speaking from the team’s mandatory minicamp in Maui on Tuesday, McVay didn’t shut the door completely on a possible trade but painted a cautious picture. “Definitely don’t want to rule anything out because we’re always open-minded to onboarding and acquiring quality players and people like him,” McVay said, via NFL.com. “But there would be some obstacles that are real that are in the place of maybe preventing that from occurring.”

Among those challenges: the timing of Ramsey’s availability and, most notably, his contract. The 30-year-old is due $24.3 million in 2025 and carries a cap hit of $16.6 million. “What is his salary? And are we able to take that on just based on our current situation?” McVay added. “Those are things that you’re usually planning months in advance.”
The Rams learned of Ramsey’s availability only in April, after Dolphins GM Chris Grier confirmed Miami’s intent to explore trade options. The timing may have limited L.A.’s ability to adjust their roster strategy.
Ramsey, a former All-Pro and Super Bowl champion with the Rams, was traded to Miami in March 2023. Though he signed a three-year, $72.3 million extension in 2024, he missed the Pro Bowl for the first time since 2016.
For now, the Rams are set to move forward with Darious Williams, Ahkello Witherspoon, and a young group of cornerbacks. Ramsey, meanwhile, remains away from the Dolphins as trade talks drag on.
Whether a reunion happens before Week 1 remains to be seen—but as McVay emphasized, the price and timing may be too steep.
