Following the Los Angeles Rams’ agreement with quarterback Matthew Stafford to secure his return for the 2025 season, Stafford himself expressed optimism about the potential for an extended tenure with the team. While Stafford is currently under contract through the 2026 season, head coach Sean McVay has indicated that the team is adopting a flexible, year-to-year perspective regarding the quarterback position.
Given Stafford’s age of 37, the reality remains that the Rams will eventually need to identify and develop another long-term option at quarterback. This looming need has led to speculation that the team might select a quarterback early in this month’s NFL Draft.

However, speaking to reporters at the league meetings last week, McVay offered a somewhat different perspective that didn’t necessarily reinforce this line of thinking.
“I think that’s I think that’s unlikely,” McVay stated, via SI.com. “I’ll be honest with you, I haven’t done a whole lot of work on the quarterbacks. I feel really good about where our quarterback room is, even though we’re not naive to the fact that Matthew hopefully got a couple more years that he wants to play. But he’s also learned the right to be able to say, ‘after this year, hey, I’m gonna, I’m gonna go ahead and hang them up.’ I’m hopeful that that’s not the case, but I haven’t done enough work to really have an educated opinion on that. That’s not something that I would see us going, but maybe not.”
It’s also prudent to consider that McVay would likely refrain from publicly revealing the team’s actual draft strategy in advance of the event. Therefore, nothing can be definitively ruled out until the draft proceedings commence in Green Bay in a couple of weeks.
At that point, the Rams’ selections will reveal whether they intend to add another quarterback to the roster to develop behind Stafford alongside current backups Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett. McVay’s comments, while suggesting a lower probability of an early quarterback selection, leave enough ambiguity to maintain an element of surprise as the draft unfolds.
