The Los Angeles Rams are strategically navigating the present and future of their quarterback position. While it’s widely acknowledged that the career of their Super Bowl-winning quarterback, Matthew Stafford, is in its later stages, the Rams recently secured his presence under center for at least the 2025 season through a restructured contract, adopting a flexible year-to-year approach thereafter.
This move, as noted by Rams head coach Sean McVay, provides stability for the immediate future while the team considers its long-term options.
Los Angeles Rams Draft QB In 1st Round In ESPN Mock Draft

Finding a franchise quarterback is one of the most challenging tasks in the NFL, and head coach Sean McVay and the organization appear to be proactively addressing this. In ESPN NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest mock draft, the Rams are projected to select Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart with the 26th overall pick in this month’s draft.
This potential selection suggests a thoughtful approach to succession planning, aiming to ensure a smooth transition without a prolonged rebuilding phase once Stafford decides to hang up his cleats.
Kiper Jr. articulated his reasoning, stating, “I love this pick because of the potential. Rams coach Sean McVay could develop Dart into a legit future starter. Of course, I say ‘future’ because Stafford’s contract restructure keeps him in Los Angeles for at least another season. But he’s 37 years old, and they have to make plans for 2026 and beyond.
“Dart can hit receivers’ strike zones on a rope, and his ability to throw on the run is fun to watch. He had 4,279 passing yards, 29 TD throws and six interceptions last season. And this pick would bring him back to the West Coast — Dart spent 2021 at USC before transferring to Ole Miss. Given a season to learn under Stafford and transition to the NFL game after playing in Lane Kiffin’s RPO-happy offense, Dart has a high ceiling in the pros.”
Stafford, who recently concluded his 16th NFL season at the age of 37, demonstrated his continued ability by throwing for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
As the 2025 NFL Draft’s first round approaches on Thursday, April 24th, LA’s potential selection of Jaxson Dart reflects a balanced strategy: maximizing their Super Bowl window with a proven veteran while simultaneously investing in a promising young talent who can learn and develop under Stafford’s mentorship and within Sean McVay’s quarterback-friendly offensive system.
