Los Angeles Rams Say Starter Now Week-to-Week, Still Limited in Practice

The Los Angeles Rams shared news on multiple injury fronts this week. Quarterback Matthew Stafford returned to practice after dealing with back issues, and head coach Sean McVay provided a significant update on left tackle Alaric Jackson, who continues to work his way back from blood clots.

Jackson, who signed a three-year, $57 million extension with Los Angeles this offseason, has not practiced since June. He previously battled blood clots in 2022, missing nine games, and his status for Week 1 remains uncertain. Still, McVay sounded optimistic about his progress.

“He’s doing great,” McVay told reporters. “He’s on track and with him truly taking that thing a week at a time. He is in great shape right now. He’s able to be physically active. There are just some restrictions in regard to being able to participate in some of the full-time activities. I couldn’t be more impressed with how he’s handling this situation. What a great job he’s done taking care of himself. He’s added good muscle. He’s taken great care of himself and I think he’s in great physical and mental shape and we’ll look forward to getting him out on the field sooner than later.”

While the Rams remain hopeful Jackson will be cleared for full participation soon, McVay confirmed the tackle is still under certain limitations. For now, his status is considered week-to-week.

The Rams anticipated possible delays in Jackson’s return when they signed veteran lineman D.J. Humphries to a one-year deal this summer. Humphries, who brings years of starting experience, would likely step in at left tackle if Jackson isn’t ready. Los Angeles also has Warren McClendon and David Quessenberry on the roster as depth options.

Jackson, however, is a cornerstone player when healthy. He has started 35 games for the Rams over the past three seasons, and his ability to anchor the blind side is critical for Stafford’s protection—especially given the quarterback’s recent back concerns.

Stafford’s health remains just as pivotal to Los Angeles’ outlook. The veteran quarterback had not participated in training camp because of lingering back discomfort, though he was seen throwing before the Rams’ preseason matchup against the Chargers. Two days later, he returned to practice in pads, giving the offense a needed boost.

The Rams’ fortunes this season may hinge on Stafford’s availability. If he suffers a setback, the team would be forced to turn to Stetson Bennett or Jimmy Garoppolo—options that carry far less upside for a squad with playoff aspirations.

Rams Weapons in Place

Los Angeles bolstered its offense in the offseason by trading for star wideout Davante Adams, who joins emerging talent Puka Nacua in what could be one of the NFC’s most dynamic receiving tandems. With a healthy Stafford and a stable offensive line led by Jackson, the Rams believe they can return to contention in a loaded conference.

For now, all eyes are on the left tackle’s recovery. McVay’s confidence in Jackson’s discipline and conditioning is a strong sign, but until he is cleared for full participation, the Rams’ offensive line picture will remain in flux.
