3 Biggest Implications Of Blockbuster Jared Verse-Myles Garrett Trade

Jared Verse is no longer a member of the Los Angeles Rams. The 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year was traded to the Cleveland Browns for star pass rusher Myles Garrett. The move sent shockwaves around the NFL as the Rams made another big move weeks after drafting Ty Simpson in the NFL draft. Verse’s exit signals huge implications for the league and for the long-term future of the franchise.

The Rams sent Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick to Cleveland for Garrett, according to Schefter in a June 1 post on X. Here’s a look at the implications of the trade for Los Angeles.

What Jared Verse Blockbuster Trade Means For Rams

#3 – 2025 Made Jared Verse Expendable

The first basic implication of moving on from Jared Verse was that Les Snead expected more out of him and was disappointed to see the second-year pass rusher essentially tread water instead of delivering a breakout season with eight fewer total tackles and a total of 7.5 sacks. As such, Snead viewed him as expendable and sent him away as part of the package to get Myles Garrett.

Parenthetically, the Browns also seemingly didn’t view Jared Verse as top-notch material, considering that the Rams had to give up three draft picks, including a first-rounder. Both sides also seemingly didn’t put much stock in Verse’s second consecutive Pro Bowl.

#2 – More Pressure On Matthew Stafford

While some may look at this as a win for the win-now side of things for the Rams and thus, a win for Matthew Stafford, it also places even more pressure on him to perform. With Myles Garrett joining the Rams, the bar now is Super Bowl or bust for the quarterback.

Anything less would be a disastrous result after committing resources to the move for years to come. There was already pressure for Stafford to perform at a high mark with Ty Simpson in town, but now the Rams have essentially told Stafford that the goal is the Super Bowl and anything less would be bad, leaving Stafford to wonder what that means. In other words, a difficult situation just got tougher for the quarterback.

#1 – The Future Matters, But Now Matters More

The Ty Simpson addition led many to conclude that Les Snead was attempting to sit on both sides of the fence in terms of winning it all and building for the future. However, the addition of Garrett, who is set to make $40 million this season per Spotrac, has pushed Les Snead deep into all-in territory.

That’s exciting for Rams fans, but it has also put the team on the countdown clock. In the next few years, Garrett, who is heading into an age-31 season, will seemingly be at the end of his best years, if not his career. Davante Adams, who led the NFL in receiving touchdowns last year, will also be off the team in all likelihood.

Matthew Stafford also might not be around, which means that the Rams will have to find a new core of players. Put simply, Ty Simpson better be a hit, or the Rams may have put too many eggs into 2026 in a mortgage that will see payments due for years to come.
