Embattled Los Angeles Chargers Player Shines During Day 4 Of Training Camp

Los Angeles Chargers‘ former First-Round pick Quentin Johnston has become quite a polarizing player. After a tepid rookie campaign, Johnston saw a good improvement in Year 2, but still struggled with critical drops, leading to uneasiness among the fans.

That, coupled with the breakout of rookie Ladd McConkey, means Johnston is staring at a critical Year 3. He might be the most scrutinized player in this year’s Training Camp, and so far, he is certainly quieting the naysayers.

After a strong start to camp, Johnston saw his breakout performance during Monday’s overcast morning practice.

Quentin Johnston Shines In Los Angeles Chargers Day 4 Of Training Camp

Johnston finished the day with 2 touchdowns on beautiful high-arcing throws from Justin Herbert. They were both picture-perfect plays, and just what fans had dreamed of when the Chargers first drafted QJ.

The first one was a 50+ yard bomb down the left hash where Herbert dropped the ball perfectly into the basket of Johnston, and he walked into the endzone for six. Couldn’t have handed the ball off any cleaner.

The next touchdown came on a red-zone type play from the 25-yard line. QJ beat Nikko Reed on the left sideline, and Herbert hit him in the corner of the end zone with another perfect pass, putting the ball in a place that only Johnston could get.

The two plays are a small sample size, but they are proof that if Johnston can get out of his own way, he has all the tools to be a very good receiver in this league and for the Los Angeles Chargers.

With the shocking retirement of Mike Williams, Johnston will be relied on more to step up and seize the starting outside receiver spot.

So far through 4 days of camp, the first unit has been Ladd McConkey in the slot, and Quentin Johnston and Jalen Reagor on the outside.

Johnston finished last year with 711 yards and 8 touchdowns. Is this the year that he crosses the 1000-yard mark and silences the doubters for good?
